These 2 pages may sound alarmist, Amsterdam is probably no worse for crime than most other international cities with high tourism, however, you must be made aware that it has a high percentage of "Crack" & Heroin addicts. These people need a lot of money to support their habits and Tourists are a particular target for theft of anything that can be sold to raise money.

"If it aint nailed down, a Junky will steal it, if it is nailed down a Junky will try to steal it"

Take very good care of your luggage all the way from your home to your Hotel in Amsterdam.

Be particularly alert if you arrive in Amsterdam via Centraal (Central) Railway Station

(See next page for more)

Bag-snatchers/Luggage thieves / Pickpockets/Bag-slashers work the airport, train stations, trains, trams etc in the Netherlands just as in any other country - including yours and mine !

Keep tickets, money etc on you in an inner pocket and /or money belt throughout the whole journey. A flat fabric shoulder bag ( the old "Hippy" type) worn INSIDE your outermost garment, (coat, jacket etc,) is also good for this.

Ensure essential things like Passport, Credit Cards,Travellers Cheques, large amounts of money, tickets, etc are not easy pickings for thieves.

DO NOT keep these in your suitcase or cabin luggage at any stage of your journey or put them in a Rucksack!!

Quite apart from theft, if your luggage decides not to accompany you to Amsterdam and flies elsewhere, at least you can get one with your tour while the Airline sorts it all out, - dont forget to enquire about cash compensation off the airline immediatly if this happens for "essentials" needed until your luggage hopefully re-appear in Amsterdam -usually payable after 24 hours

Please be aware that thefts happen on aircraft too. Your hand baggage may not be in the locker above your seat due to late boarding etc, but in one further forward, by the time you get to it when leaving the plane, your stuff is gone, never to be seen again. I know someone who lost a camcorder this way.

Dont rely on the padlocks that come with suitcases. Use good steel ( I have actually seen plastic ones on sale !!) combination padlocks on all luggage not fitted with such, if possible. Bonus: no keys to lose or misplace !

Don`t worry ! - the City is well policed, street and other robberies are relatively few -just don`t invite trouble by being careless with things like luggage, cameras etc, getting leglessly pissed and/or flashing your cash/valuable jewellery around - common sense really.

However, just in case...........
