Heathrow Airport is 24km/15 miles from Central London and has 4 Terminals. Terminals 1,2 & 3 are in one block, Terminal 4 is separate and some distance away from 1,2,& 3.

From Central London:

The new "Heathrow Express", departing from Paddington main line train station, or the Underground/Metro/Subway ("Tube") trains (Piccadilly line) are the fastest and the cheapest way from Central London and stop at all terminals. Details on "Heathrow" site (link above) under "Getting to the Airport" (at bottom of page.)

Taxis cost £35-£45 and, like buses and private cars, can be subject to long delays due to heavy traffic and road works.

(Road travel to Heathrow from Central London is therefore not recommended.)

Journey time from Central London to Heathrow via Underground takes between 45 mins & 1 hour. Timetables available on "Heathrow" site above.

Flights

Several Airlines operate daily services to Amsterdam from Heathrow, among them BA, Lufthansa, BMI and KLM

Flights from Heathrow to Amsterdam take about 45 mins.

Always try to get to the Airport & "check in" at the very least 2 hours prior to Departure. The tightened security since "9/11" may mean some delay.

Please note: If you are not arriving at Heathrow from Central London: KLM, the main Dutch Airline, departs from Terminal 4 at Heathrow , as does BA - a long way from the main Terminals 1, 2,and 3 and Heathrow`s Coach station.

Free connection buses are available from these terminals to Terminal 4, and now there is also the quicker option of a free transfer on the new "Heathrow Express" rail line - see "Heathrow" link above, always leave plenty of time for this transfer.

However, there are some very good deals to be had flying from Terminal 4 with KLM, -regularly as low as £68.00 return-midweek & weekends ! -and possibly from elsewhere in the UK as KLM flies to Amsterdam from 15 UK airports.

Also check the BA site - they have recently announced huge cuts in European fares and abolished the "Saturday night" rule in order to compete with the "Budget" airlines following a dramatic fall in seat sales, in common with other airlines, following "9/11"

If you opt to fly with British Midland ("BMI") (Terminal 1) be advised that they have introduced a system under which the flight is totally closed 30 mins prior to departure, under no circumstances will you be allowed to board after closure. This is to cut delayed departures/loss of "flight slots". This probably also applies to other Airlines as well.

Lufthansa departs for Amsterdam from Terminal 2

"Easyjet" :Easyjet fly to Amsterdam from Luton, Aberdeen, and Gatwick, also do flights from Liverpool from around £50 return, journey time is 55 minutes. (Thanks to "Geoff" for this info.
