 Amsterdammer`s prefer Cash.

The saying "In God we trust, all others pay cash" may have originated here !

however

Eurocheques, with Guarantee Card, are a widely trusted alternative, changeable for cash in Banks and accepted in many shops, (though I doubt this includes coffeeshops.)

Credit Cards are not widely accepted outside of larger hotels and shops and most restaurants. (major cards only).

Bank Automatic Transaction Machines ("ATM") take Access, Mastercard, Eurocard, American Express, Banknet, Diners Club and Visa cards ONLY.

American Express has its office at Damrak 66

But please remember, borrowing any money on any Credit Card is expensive, and interest is charged from the moment of the transaction. If you can use your Bank ATM Card abroad, you may be charged for this service and also not get a great rate of exchange from your Bank on conversion to your Bank statement.

Check with your Bank prior to departure which Bank in Amsterdam they have ATM service arrangements with, otherwise, its possible you will have to pay an extra "user fee" if you use another Banks ATM, or the Cash Card will not work at all.

f300 (€140?) minimum withdrawal when used in a Bank ATM, slightly better exchange rate than cash.
