Try
the local "French Fries" served with Mayonnaise or Tomato
Sauce from the "Febo"
and other street bars all over the city, The "satekroquets"
from "Febo" vending machines are o.k. - mild curry filling.
There
are also a few "Herring
Stalls"
that sell roasted mackerel in a Roll which is very
good.
The
rolls, -"Broodje"-filled
with combinations of meat, /cheese,/eggs,
and salad
seen in many food shops around lunchtime are excellent.
Some
non-smoking bars, known as
"eetcafes",
do an extensive range of good value hot and cold
food,
"Aas Van Bokalan", KeizerGracht
335,
is considered one of the best for value for money as is
"De
Doffer", Runstraat 12,
both attract a young clientele.
There
is a KFC and MacDonalds on Damrak near the Dam and
MacDonalds and Burger King both have sites around the corner
in Niewendijk, the pedestrianized shopping
street.
I
can personally recommend the following:
"Barneys",
which also does Veggie/Vegan
Food,
does cooked food all day - opens and closes early. Famous
for its all day Irish/English Breakfast. Now has a second
eatery, "Barneys Brasserie" 2 doors before the original
shop. (
on my last visit I noticed that the menu for both
establishments seems to have been cut quite drastically to
Irish breakfast, normal British cooked breakfast and one or
two other items only -this may be temporary thing while the
"Brasserie" gets established)
"Al`s
Plaice"
is an English Fish and Chip Shop situated at
Korte
Nieuwendijk 10.
(On the way to "Barneys", 2-3 mins walk off Nieuwzizds
Voorburgwal on left.)
Closed
Tuesday
. Open
Mon. 5pm to 10 pm, other days, including Sunday, 12 -10
pm.
Large
Cod and a chips is around f12.50 (€ 5.70)(June 2001). Fish
is cooked to order.
Eat
in or take away.
Does
real English style fried potato chips (c/w Salt &
Vinegar) to perfection, made from whole potatoes, not from
"reconstituted potato" from which the local & Burger
house "French Fries" are made.
Huge
menu includes Fish cakes, Chicken, Sausages, "Pukka" Pies
(including vegetarian,)
Pickles,
Curry Sauce, Mushy Peas, and a large range of
drinks.
Does
some set "value" menus: "The full Cholesterol", "The full
Monty", its Dutch variant, "The full
Cloggie"(Al
gets a lot of Dutch customers !
)
and "The full Vegetarian"
Many
of the Budget Hotels on Warmoestraat also do cheapish food.
Variable
quality.
Lots
of places, including some coffeeshops, sell Pancakes and
waffles with syrup, portions may seem small but they are
very filling. Dutch cakes, pastries and sweets are all
usually very good.
Lots
of small "fast food " places selling Pizza slices, Kebabs,
hot-dogs etc. around Damrak and the Dam Monument. Variable
quality, however.
