You can see from the previous 2 pages that Coffeeshop owners have a lot of hassle, so be nice to them and their staff, they struggle to bring you the good service they do. Please remember staff are usually happy to answer some questions, when they are not very busy but they are NOT the local tourist information office - many of them live outside Centrum and thus will not know things like where the nearest "ATM" or Bank is !! Please do not be offended if some refuse to smoke with you- they have a job to do and have to keep their heads together ! Wanna run a Coffeeshop? Heres How Never, Never, buy weed on the street, at best you will get ripped off, and, most probably, you will also be violently robbed. Other Drugs: Always fake, sometimes lethal !! (e.g., Rat Poison !) The Dope on the Dope The local product is the result of a decade or more of crossing , interbreeding and cloning by both Dutch and American cultivators of Sativa and Indica strains, to produce heavy cropping plants with high levels of THC that grow and yield well in colder climates or indoors under lights. The work continues and new varieties continue to appear. A recent developement has been "skuff", a hash made from the weed, which is improving in strength and quality. N.B. If you are on medication, consult a Doctor before smoking/eating dope. Smoking Dope will not solve any problems you have, anymore than alcohol will !
Shopping ! Grass and hash is either sold by the gram and weighed to order, or by the prepacked f25 (€12?) bag - it varies from shop to shop, a few shops also do some "sample bags" from €4.50 to €6. Some prices since the Euro(€) took over from the Guilder: Grass "White Widow" : €5.88 - €7.0 (various shops) "Jack Herrer" : €5.88-€6.0(various shops) "AK47" : €7.5 - €8.88 (various shops) "Northern Lights" : €6.0 Hash Morrocan Hash : € 5.55 & €7.14 (2 different qualities) Lebanese Hash : €9.0 Nepalese Hash : €9.10 (Gathered by Lemming March 2002 - all prices per gram) I have read a report that a lot of the Black Hash in Amsterdam is heavily contaminated with surplus Afghan Opium. (You may also care to read the articles on the Coffeeshops here.) I cannot confirm or deny the accusations made in these reports. The menu (ask for it if you dont see it) will give the weight the price per gram. (1 Euro= 1US$, /GB£0.67p (€1.5 to US$/£1) aprox) Many shops do their own "Brands" and "Specials". Hash cake and bon-bons are normally sold at the coffee bar. Initially, smoking any of the varieties hits you like a brick across the back of the head if you are used to a diet of low/ medium quality dope - so you might find movement a bit difficult for a while, so dont "load" that first Joint/Bong/ Pipe ! After a little use the stuff becomes manageable, some varieties even give you a very "speedy" lift that can make sleep difficult. All varieties have a pleasant taste, the orange, lemon (citral) and bubble gum varieties in particular, and all burn well in a "J"/"Doobie" or Bong. As a general rule, the more it costs a "g", the more "lethal" (and I do mean "lethal" !) it is. If you have not smoked Dutch weed/Skunk before, try something around f11 - f15 (€5 - €6.80) to start - it might even be prudent to select a coffeeshop within staggering distance of your hotel - seriously. The "stone" is long lasting, so it is not necessary to buy large amounts -1g is enough initially - you can always buy more later.
