It is not the purpose of this site to review most of the 300 coffeeshops in Amsterdam. However, you can not have a Coffeeshop Tour without some Coffeeshops,so lets go on a virtual tour of some of Amsterdams finest. Map of Tour & Amsterdam on previous page. The tour starts at the top of Nieuwzizds Voorburgwal ("Newsides") and all the shops are either on or off this busy street, however, directions to each of the coffeeshops is also given on individual coffeeshop pages for those who wish to start at the Dam Monument at the bottom of Damrak. The (partial) map covers all of the shops visited on the tour. We will assume that it is past mid-day -lets be realistic - few of you are likely to be early morning people ! - and that you have just staggered off a tram from your accommodation at the terminus at central station and are currently near the top of Damrak and are in need of food. Instead of walking down Damrak which stretches in front of you, turn right onto Prins Hendrikade and walk the short distance to Newsides, a wide street that runs parallel to Damrak. Enter and take the RIGHT turn, I.E away from the direction of Damrak, into Nieuwendijk. (Nieuwendijk runs both sides of "Newsides") After a 10 or so minute or so walk, we arrive at Barneys Suitably refreshed by breakfast & a drink and a smoke or 2, we stagger back to the junction with"Newsides". Some of you will have fallen by the wayside already, attracted by other coffeshops on the way back or too wrecked to continue right now, but the rest of you should cross the road, using the the crossing so thoughtfully provided, turn right and head on down "Newsides" to Betty Boops. to see the frogs, have a drink and a smoke (or two!) Again there will be casualties, but survivors, on leaving, head back onto Newsides and continue left on down to Homegrown Fantasy. Dont forget to check out the weird toilet while there ! Great menu of organically grown grass. From Homegrown Fantasy those still able to walk, turn left on on exiting the shop and go to the junction with Mozes en Aaron Straat. You are now parallel with the Dam Monument. See Grey Area page for further directions. Returning to Newsides from the Grey Area, 2 possible routes present themselves: 1. cross the road and walk up Mozes en Aaron Straat to the Dam monument and from there visit, Greenhouse Centrum, Sheeba t`Nes-Cafe, (after 5pm) and other Warmoestraat area shops marked on the map. 2. Catch a tram or walk further down "Newsides" to "Spui" and visit Tweede Kamer, Dutch Flowers and De Dampkring. If you are still standing after that lot, then you are either cheating by not smoking enough dope in each shop, in which case go back to the beginning and start again, or propped up against a wall unconscious !
