A
short ride on a 4, 16, 24, or 25 tram from Central Station
takes you to "De Pijp", an area south of Centrum that few
coffeeshop tourists investigate -the "real"
Amsterdam.
De
Pijp
takes it name from a narrow drainage ditch that predated
settlement -it was originally a working class district which
is today a lively multiethnic community, home to over 160
nationalities and some excellent coffeeshops.
10
or so years ago, "the pipe" was run down with an unsavory
reputation, but now things are improving, expensive
restaurants have moved in and house prices are up
350%.
De
Pijp is traditionally famous for its massive market, 250 +
stalls that stretch down Albert
Cuypstraat
selling mainly cheap
fresh food
and clothing, flanked by over 100 shops, restaurants, cafes,
bakeries, cafes ,shoe shops etc. - even a couple of
coffeeshops.
Nearby
is a very pleasant small park with a lake,
Sarphatipark,
which,
on a warm day, is a good place to chill out / eat lunch
(bought in the market?) /feed the Ducks/ whatever.
Avoid
this area after dark.
I
will give you one coffeeshop to get you
started:
Club
Media:
Gerard
Doustraat 83
- 85.
A
large shop divided into 2, a coffeeshop area with plenty of
tables and chairs, and a "games room" with a pool table and,
unusually, a Darts board. Light airy interior with decorated
with "Ajax"
Football Club memorabilia. Games room has a long, very
comfortable upholstered bench with tables. The shop has a
large menu - over 20
choices !
There
are lots of other coffeeshops on Gerard Doustraat and the
surrounding area.
Go
for it ! - and let me know if you find somewhere
special.
