"Haarlem Coffeeshop Tour"
( On another UK Server)

Strange But True corner: 28 May 2003:

New legislation banning smoking in public places means people buying joints from coffeeshops have to go outside to smoke them !!

7 July 2003: New report states that regular users of strong cannabis are 7 times more likely to develop mental illness.

General E-mail Replies:

In response to several e-mails from the USA

"The terminology and construction of Joints/Doobies/Spliffs - call them what you will ! "

"America & Britain: 2 nations divided by a common language" (George Bernard Shaw)

(liberally quoted !)

1. Method mainly favoured in USA: Take one cigarette paper. (Kingsize in Texas?) Fill with weed, lick, light, inhale deeply. Sorted.

(B.Clinton, Washington: Note: You have to inhale - this is why you aint getting stoned)

2.Basic British Joint: Take 3 standard cigarette papers and stick them together like this:

Fill across with tobacco from join of "3" with "1" and "2", up to 1/2" in diameter, (About the size of a slim Cigar, Bill) Lick the whole length of the joint and seal down.

(The rolling part is not easy for beginners - just practice -often !)

A king-size paper can be used for a smaller joint.

Make a roach ** out of thin rolled cardboard, about 1/2 " inch wide and 1" long, insert into"3" -ensuring it connects with the tobacco. Twist off the other end, adjust, light, inhale deeply. Smoke down to about 3/4" of the roach. Sorted.

Sometimes, (more usually in Amsterdam !!) the tobacco gets left out and is replaced wholly by Weed - size is retained - and maybe some Hash is aded as well. Known as a "Neat One" or "A wrecker".

**In USA, "Roach" in this context usually means the unsmokeable remainder of the single paper joint/doobie.

The Dutch have a variation on the above, they insert the "roach" BEFORE rolling the tobacco and hash/weed, their joints are buildt to be coned shape, tapering towards the roach end. (The Euro Joint ?)

You can buy pre-rolled Dutch style joints in many Coffeeshops with or without Tobacco -they sometimes even come pre-packaged in little plastic cone shaped tubes or "Bubble Pack" These joints are rolled by machines at a rate of 110 (or more) a minute.

Joints in Coffeeshops are shared by groups of friends, they are not generally passed around the room. Many Dutch will roll a joint just for themselves, this lessens the possibility of contracting things like Colds or Influenza. Many staff in coffeeshops do not accept joints for much the same reason - and because they have job to do and wish to remain focussed.

YES:You can smoke weed/hash bought elsewhere in any coffeeshop - but you must buy a drink.

NO: There is no hard sell, quite apart from advertising in any way being a major breach of the Coffeeshops Licence, selling a bag of weed in a Coffeeshop is much the same as selling cigarettes in a Tobacconist: no need to promote it, it sells itself.

YES: Non-Cannabis smokers are welcome in Coffeeshops -everyone is too stoned to notice you are not smoking weed or hash. But you must buy a drink, of course.

Smartshop/Headshops: Getting some mail on buying mushrooms "`shrooms". Lots of Smartshops appearing in Amsterdam selling Pipes, Bongs, `shrooms etc. Amsterdam Coffeeshop Directory has a section on these shops.

Please, Don`t send me e-mails asking how much spending money you need to take with you or ask for budgets broken down into accommodation, food, etc. How long is "a piece of string" ? I cant possibly predict how much you are going to spend. My advice is to take as much money as you can in cash & travellers cheques and a Credit or Bank ATM card as backup. I reckon bare minimum for the Budget travellers, prepared to stay in a hostel, €50 a day but it can probably done on less.
